The community of Tegetcha is nestled in the lower hills of Dorze, and its unique mid-land climate provides a lush environment for the cultivation of tropical fruit. Family gardens burst with avocados, mangos, lemons, papayas, guavas, and oranges. Family farmers explain how these tropical fruits came to Dorze, how they benefit the community and contribute to conservation. Visitors will learn how to tell when a fruit is ripe and how it is picked.
Families in Dorze also grow coffee and medicinal plants. Guests will discover how coffee is grown and brewed, while enjoying the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Farmers also teach the visitors about medicinal plants such as Artemisia, a pink flower used to treat anemia, and moringa, a leaf given to those with diabetes and high blood pressure. Visitors have the opportunity to sample fruits and medicinal plants during the two hour tour. Be wary of accepting a lime though...in Ethiopian tradition this is a sign of courtship!
This tour is available from May-September and December-February, when the fruits are in season.
