Wollo Highlands: Lalibela & Meket

Located in the Amhara Region, the Wollo Highlands are home to some of Ethiopia’s most important historic sites. The region is best known for Lalibela and its stunning 12th century monolithic churches, hewn out of the rocky hills. However, visitors to Wollo can also experience some of the most stunning landscapes of the Ethiopian highlands. Through 2-10 day treks, visitors of any age and fitness level can explore these vistas. Highlights include viewing birds of prey soaring above, watching Gelada baboons scramble down the cliff face, and crossing meadows where local shepherd boys watch their flocks. Visitors to Wollo get a unique view of rural Ethiopia.

During the treks, visitors stay with local communities in community managed guest houses. Built out of native materials, the guest houses include comfortable beds, clean sheets and blankets. Each site has a dining room, a simple outdoor shower, and an eco-toilet. Upon arrival at each camp, visitors are greeted by community hosts offering tasty snacks and coffee. Community cooks prepare three substantial meals each day inspired by local cuisine.

Tours in Wollo are offer by Tesfa Tours in partnership with the local guide association. The communities own and manage the community guest houses and proceeds from their business go to promote economic and social development. With ownership and responsibility in the hands of locals, significant strides have already been made to improve living conditions in the area.

Visitors can book a 2-10 day trek through Tesfa Tours that fits their fitness and adventure needs. Treks range from short, mostly flat hikes to full rugged, mountain treks. Read more about trekking options here...
